Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs), which are modulated by a gate-driven ionic doping/de-doping of the organic bulk channel material, resemble the ion-driven processes and dynamics of biological systems. Compared to OFETs, OECTs operate at considerably lower voltages (<1 V), have a higher transconductance, maintain excellent threshold voltage stability, demonstrate strong ion concentration-dependent switching properties, and are in general highly biocompatible.
